2024 USBG World Class Sponsored By DIAGEO season is in full swing! The competitors are fiercely preparing for the National Competition taking place in Denver, CO on June 2-4. They'll take part in three challenges that will test their skills and knowledge behind the bar before learning if they made it to the Top 10 and then taking it all as the 2024 U.S. Bartender of the Year!

Kiki Avalos

Kiki Avalos

Kiki Avalos embarked on her bartending journey in a campus craft beer bar, later exploring diverse settings such as fine and casual dining establishments, as well as a Japanese-inspired karaoke bar. Despite lacking formal kitchen experience, Kiki's approach to cocktails has always been influenced by a culinary lens.

Originally pursuing art school, Kiki never anticipated a career in the hospitality industry. However, she feels privileged to infuse her artistic energy into the drinks she creates, blending her passion for creativity with her newfound career path.

Personal bartending motto? Always be transparent with guests even if it feels awkward.

Lance Bowman

Lance Bowman

Lance Bowman is 31 year veteran of the hospitality and bar industry. Prior to their move to Chicago he was based in Cincinnati where they ran multiple beverage programs, as well as managing and beverage directing Japp's Since 1879 that, under their stewardship, was named to Esquire Magazine's prestigious "Best Bars in America" List in 2016. Lance relocated to Chicago to work with Matthias Merges and the Folk Art Management Group, where they helmed the beverage program at the now closed Yusho, as well as the other properties in the company including Billy Sunday, Old Irving Brewing Company, and Lucky Dorr. After that they went on to concept and design the Jean-Banchet winning Alderman bar.

They currently act as a beverage director under the Somos Hospitality umbrella, as well as being a prolific bar consultant. Lance also has a deep passion for the history and stories behind spirits and cocktails, and loves the opportunity to share them, whether it be to hundreds of people at a symposium, or a single guest sitting at his bar.

It is their deeply held belief that every guest that walks through the door and sits at their bar should receive the unique experience that they want, and not have to succumb to the ego driven bar programs that have taken a lot of the fun out of drinking. In their own words, "I don't sell cocktails, beer, wine, or booze, I just happen to sell experiences that include them."

Personal bartending motto? I don't sell cocktails, I sell an experience that involves them as a piece of the experience.

Kevin Collins

Kevin Collins

Kevin Collins, the General Manager of Curio Bar in Denver Central Market, brings over 15 years of industry expertise to his role. Hailing from Indiana, Kevin pursued his passion for music at Indiana State University before relocating to Colorado in 2016.

Throughout his career, Kevin has held various positions in esteemed establishments, honing his skills and cultivating exceptional cocktail programs. In addition to his professional endeavors, he indulges in hobbies such as home brewing and distilling, further deepening his understanding of fine libations.

Kevin's dedication to hospitality is evident in his warm and comforting demeanor, reflecting his genuine passion for providing memorable experiences. His commitment to excellence was recognized in 2021 when he achieved a top 50 placement in the US for the prestigious World Class competition, marking his second notable achievement in the event.

Personal bartending motto? "It's not about you." because the guest and their preferences come before what you, as the bartender, want to make or think is cool.

Jarmel Doss

Jarmel Doss

Jarmel is a Chicago native and began her hospitality career while attending the University of Chicago, where she was pursuing her degree in biochemistry. After years behind the stick, working in bars throughout Chicago, her path led her to The Aviary in the West Loop's Fulton Market District. The Aviary was known for being one of the best bars in the world, with a flavor and technique focused menu.

Jarmel's interest was piqued when she decided she wanted to learn more about cocktails and the culture surrounding them.Within a year, she was promoted to the Assistant Bar Director position. She would spend the next six years assisting at the helm creating cocktails for both The Aviary & The Office menu. During her time in management she was also passionate about her continued education as well as the education of the staff. This was apparent in her mentoring abilities and her relationships with her co-workers and staff.

Through all of this, she was also fiercely focused on competing and she won multiple titles including first place in Chicago Stars, third place in Shake it Up National Classic and was Top 10 in Diageo presents World Class for two consecutive years. Jarmel moved to Miami in the winter of 2021 for a change of scenery. Most recently she helped open Higher Ground at the Arlo Hotel in Wynwood, in conjunction with Bar Lab Hospitality, as their Bar Manager. In 2023, she joined Fam Hospitality Group as their Beverage Director.

Billy Fredlund

Billy Fredlund

Billy Fredlund, with nearly two decades of experience in the hospitality industry, possesses a deep-rooted passion for connecting with people. Balancing a full-time IT job with shifts at the bar, he thrives on the diverse interactions and relationships he cultivates within the community.

Beyond his own bar, Billy is a fervent advocate for other establishments in the Indy metro area. He dedicates his time to championing fellow bartenders and industry professionals, ensuring they receive the recognition they deserve. When he's not serving patrons behind the bar, Billy can often be found spreading positivity and support throughout the local hospitality scene.

Personal bartending motto? Service above all else.

Chris Marek

Chris Marek

Hailing from Columbus, Ohio, Chris Marek boasts five years of bartending experience and is currently in his third year participating in World Class. Known for his innovative approach to mixology, Chris enjoys incorporating unconventional ingredients like ants, pastrami, and PBR into his cocktails, pushing the boundaries of flavor profiles.

Beyond the bar, Chris leads an active lifestyle, engaging in pursuits such as rock climbing. Additionally, he showcases his talents in the realm of magic, further adding to his dynamic personality and skill set.

Personal bartending motto? Too Proud.

Conor O'Reilly

Conor O'Reilly

Conor O'Reilly, a native of Dublin, Ireland, has called Austin home for the past six years. With a foundation rooted in the vibrant hospitality scene of Dublin, Conor honed his skills in various bars, restaurants, and cafes. His formative experiences in Ireland instilled in him a deep appreciation for hospitality and a desire to bring a taste of Irish warmth and charm to Texas.

In Austin, Conor has flourished as the co-beverage lead at Here nor There since its inception in June 2018. The success of their first venture led to the opening of their second location, 'In Plain Sight,' where they offer a curated selection of aperitif, digestif, and highball-style cocktails.

A seasoned competitor, Conor's passion for his craft has seen him compete at the highest levels, including reaching the USBG's World Class national finals in 2022. Returning to the 2024 finals in Denver, Conor approaches the competition with a fierce determination to emerge victorious, showcasing his expertise and dedication to his craft on the global stage.

Lyn Perez

Lyn Perez

Lyn Perez, a seasoned veteran in the dynamic realm of hospitality, boasts over eleven years of experience in the field. Their journey in mixology has been marked by an unwavering passion for crafting memorable experiences for every guest encountered along the way. With a firm commitment to fostering a sense of family and inclusion, Lyn sees the bar not just as a place for drinks, but as a sanctuary where patrons become part of an extended family.

Every cocktail crafted by Lyn is infused with hospitality and camaraderie, creating an atmosphere where everyone feels embraced and valued. They have devoted themselves to mentoring aspiring bartenders, eager to share their knowledge and support their growth. For Lyn, bartending serves as a platform to spread joy, forge connections, and cultivate lasting relationships, striving to create moments that transcend the ordinary and leave an indelible mark on the hearts of those they serve.

Personal bartending motto? Don't take it home with you. A tough shift is just that and you're much happier if you leave that stress behind.

Weston Simons

Weston Simons

Weston Simons embarked on his journey with beverages at the tender age of 15, donning the iconic paper hat of a soda jerk. Since then, he has immersed himself in various facets of beverage programs, spanning from coffee service to dive bars to high-end craft cocktails. Weston's preferred style of program is one that prioritizes quality cocktails in a relaxed, informal setting.

Growing up with a talented chef for an older sister, Weston draws significant inspiration from the culinary world, which heavily influences his approach behind the bar. He delights in experimenting with unique flavor combinations and draws inspiration from the kitchen to craft truly distinctive cocktails.

A graduate of the Boom Chicago school of comedy in Amsterdam, Weston's playful style of service is infused with elements of improvisation. He thrives on the spontaneity of creating cocktails on the spot, relishing the opportunity to see what inventive concoctions patrons request.

Personal bartending motto? Practice makes better.

Paul Webb

Paul Webb

Paul Webb's journey is a testament to the power of inspiration drawn from a life steeped in travel and diversity. From a young age, Paul has traversed various corners of the globe, residing in numerous locations across the US and exploring different countries. Professionally, his path has taken him through Virginia, Winter Park Colorado, Guam, and Denver, as well as to pop-ups and takeovers around the country.

Paul's introduction to bartending occurred unexpectedly in Winter Park when he was called upon to assist with a wedding. Despite the impromptu nature of his start, he quickly found himself immersed in the craft and fell in love with it. Throughout his career, Paul has been fortunate to be surrounded by exceptionally inspirational and talented individuals who have helped shape him into the creative beverage professional he is today.

Currently leading at Nocturne Jazz and Supper Club in Denver, Paul finds immense joy in the collaborative spirit of the establishment. By blending music, food, cocktails, wine, and world-class hospitality, the team at Nocturne creates an unparalleled experience for patrons. Paul's participation in cocktail competitions has provided him with a platform to share stories, convey creative ideas, and garner recognition for himself and the supportive team behind him.

With gratitude for the support and inspiration he receives, Paul is excited to bring prestige and recognition to the vibrant and creative city of Denver. He eagerly anticipates sharing the stories he has meticulously prepared, continuing to enrich the local cocktail scene with his passion and expertise.
